Final Fantasy X marks Squaresoft's first RPG on the Playstation 2, as well as the newest entry into one of the most popular RPG franchises of all time. For the company's first next-gen adventure, FFX throws away many of the aspects that we have come to know the series by, but it also introduces many new necessary qualities. The changes include an overhauled experience points system, and a retooled battle system that allows you to switch in party members at random, as well as use summoned creatures to do your bidding. One great addition that I admire is the implementation of voice-acting, which has sorely been missing from all previous Final Fantasy games. While the acting slides below average on a few occasions, it is rather good for the most part; much better than I predicted. The story, an intregal part for all RPGs, is very good in many respects, but I dislike the fact that it is another "teenagers save the world," only with a few twists. Nevertheless, the plot is still engrossing, and the speech only heightens the drama. In terms of graphics and music, the developers pretty much have it covered, save for a few bad textures and the repeating Battle Theme. Of course, the CG in Final Fantasy X is absolutely mind-blowing, raising the bar for realism in a video game; this is what you bought a PS2 for ladies and gentlemen! My biggest complaint about the game would have to be the random battles, which constantly interrupt your progress. However, while annoying, it isn't enough to seriously detract from the experience. As an RPG fan, a purchase is a no-brainer, but for everyone else, Final Fantasy X is a great start.
Graphics-9.0-Great character models and environments as well as incredible FMV.
Sound-9.0-Excellent music, and the voice-acting is good, if a bit inconsistent.
Controls-8.0- Nothing different here; it's just an RPG, but issuing battle commands is quick and easy.
Replay- 5.0-Beating the game doesn't offer anything new.
Overall-9.1- Yet another quality release in the legendary series that is Final Fantasy.
